A Map Of The World’s Undersea Internet Cables

An incredibly vast and complicated undersea network of fiber optic cables routes 99% of the world’s internet communications.

TeleGeography, a telecommunications market research and consulting firm, has published its annual Interactive Submarine Cable Map. The Map depicts points of internet connection as well as various facts and figures about the giant web of cables, including typical transmission latencies to and from various parts of the world.

Sea Monsters The map is beautifully designed in the style of classical cartographers, and includes mention of 4 mythical sea monsters that threatened the travel of sailors. While this may seem a frivolous embellishment to the map, Google is actually reinforcing its undersea cables to protect them from shark attacks, as shown in the video below.
